The Accelerator seeks an Executive Director.

Job Description: Executive Director

Location: Mississippi (Preferably Jackson or Delta)

Start Date: Immediate (Spring 2019)


The Mississippi Education Accelerator was founded in 2018 to improve public school options and course options for students in Mississippi by:

  • Accelerating the growth and expansion of high-performing charter schools to generate at least 15,000 high-quality seats;

  • Establishing statewide student access to best-in-class content and curriculum; and

  • Creating or convening the resources required for reimagined administration of struggling traditional district schools.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the Accelerator, including but not limited to building the model for impact, creating robust technical assistance programming, hiring and managing staff, leveraging available and new resources to results, and ensuring urgent progress toward the mission.


Leadership & Management

  • In partnership with the board, define/refine the three-year strategic plan within the first 90 days

  • Prioritize being close to the real work - including but not limited to spending time in schools, listening to leaders at the school and district levels, building relationships with leaders at all levels

  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors

  • Ensure effective systems development and maintenance to position the organization to deliver on its mission over time

  • Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of activities, services, and resources of the organization and communicate those successes, gaps, hypotheses, and plans of corrective action to the board, funders, and other constituents.

Technical Assistance to the Charter School Sector

  • Build a high-quality, year-round, scalable model for technical assistance for and provided to interested, aspiring, applying, approved, opening, and operating charter schools in the state.

  • Recruit high-quality charter management organizations (CMOs) and provide technical assistance to ease their entry into the state.

  • Establish leader talent pipeline partnerships to ensure high-capacity emerging leaders with no CMO affiliation have a clear pathway to founding schools in the state.

Student Access to Best-in-Class Content and Curriculum

  • In partnership with the board and as part of the three-year strategic plan, define this critical workstream, identify one year priorities, and execute with excellence

Support Reimagined Administration of Struggling Schools

  • In partnership with the board and as part of the three-year strategic plan, define this critical workstream, identify one year priorities, and execute with excellence

Fundraising & Communications

  • Build and execute a fundraising strategy to support the Accelerator’s ambitious plans.

  • Commit to frequent, thorough, and clear communications with all key constituents—from web presence to external relations.

  • Use external presence and relationships to identify, create, and convene new opportunities in the service of the Accelerator’s mission.


The ED will be thoroughly committed to the Accelerator’s mission. All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience. Specific requirements include:

  • Advanced degree with at least 10 years of experience

  • Track record of effectively leading and regionally and/or nationally scaling a performance- and outcomes-based organization and staff

  • Specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth

  • Excellent organizational management skills including the ability to set and achieve strategic objectives and create and manage to a fundraising plan and budget that align to strategic objectives

  • Success working with a Board of Directors and the ability to recruit new board members and cultivate existing board member relationships

  • Some marketing, public relations, and/or fundraising experience (or at minimum, exposure) with the innate ability to engage comfortably and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and communities

  • Strong written communication skills; a persuasive and passionate verbal communicator

  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, innovative; not only comfortable with but thrives in the opportunities provided by ambiguity

  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people

  • Mission-driven every day
